Foreword from Lindale's Song
1998 marks the year of Lindale's Centennial! One hundred years
of living witness for Jesus Christ in this corner of the Shenandoah Valley. When
measured against the course of human history, it's but a brief moment. When
considered from the vantage point of our own memories, much of it fades into a vast and
remote past. It merits barely a glance.
Of course, that's not true for everyone. There are some here at
Lindale whose own childhoods, friendships, growth, and spiritual development are stamped
with rich impressions from the Lindale of years gone by. Lindale's 100 years are not
insignificant for others as well. There are those who have moved on to other places,
who we barely know or remember, who first heard Jesus' call and were challenged and
nurtured at Lindale. These have gone forth to be a part of God's Kingdom elsewhere.
For the rest of us, whether the most recent baby or the newest member,
we too have now become a part of Lindale's 100 years of history. We've been grafted
in, so to speak. We have inherited 100 years. This inheritance includes the
work, decisions, yearnings, dreams, and lives of hundreds of God's people. Each
little ripple of life became a part of a larger wave. The waves became a swell and
have now washed up on our shore.
We here in the present have now become stewards of God's trust that
stretches back like a vast ocean before and of our memories. This trust also
stretches like a sea before us into the future. One hundred years hence we will be
individually remembered no better than we remember those individuals who have gone before
us. But the ripples of our lives, whether for good or ill, will surely splash on
those shores as well.
Here at Lindale we have had the opportunity to benefit from the
spiritual heritage left to us by other people. As God gives us time and grace, the
same will be said of us in the years to come. Each decision, each relationship, our
gifts and dreams, and God's work among us now, all will become a part of the tide that
breaks upon the coast of a distant future. What a privilege it is!
